Located near the corner of Linden Boulevard and 189th Street in Queens, Beth Elohim Hebrew Congregation sits at an intriguing intersection of identities that many people might consider odd, if not incompatible. Drawing deeply on both their African- and Caribbean-American heritage and the Jewish traditions they have adopted, the congregants of Beth Elohim — emblematic of a larger, growing community of Black Jews in America — have created a unique, faith-based community in the fullest sense of that expression. Through photographs and interviews, Julian Voloj and Victor Wishna paint a portrait of this compelling group of religious seekers, in the process raising questions about identity, community, faith, and the human need for connection and spiritual satisfaction that will engross and challenge readers of all backgrounds.
