The name Ethiopia means "land of the burnt-face" in Ancient Greek. The Greeks saw this country as a far-off realm, populated by remarkable people. Homer writes in his Iliad that some of the Greek gods even deigned to visit this remote land. According to the Kebra Negast, the Ethiopian national epic, the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon had a son, Menelik, who brought the Ark of the Covenant from Jerusalem to Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a land full of mysteries and myths, and a journey through this country is a journey back in time into the beginning of civilization. Julian Voloj's photographs are a document of a little known country full of history and tradition.
